Could Electricity rewire our brains and our moods?
During a recent joint study by the University of Minnesota’s Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital they have been able to improve the mental functions of patients with epilepsy by stimulating the brain small amounts of electrical energy by placing hundreds of tiny electrodes across the brain of the patient.
Using this stimulation to “get patients back in the driver’s seat” This potentially revolutionary treatment could be used to improve the lives of those struggling with mental illnesses – If it is effective for the public that is. Using the system to decode when a patient is having difficulty for example – moving beyond a negative thought, the electrical stimulation supplies a small burst of energy to boost the patient’s brain past that difficulty.
Using these electrodes could be a totally new approach to treating mental illness. Instead of medication to suppress symptoms and emotions, this is a tool that allows the patient to take control of their own minds and ultimately give them more cognitive control and focus in their lives.
