Fast Charging Tech

160km of power in under 5 minutes?

The Electrical Vehicle industry is on a mission to make “range anxiety” a thing of the past. Aiming to drastically cut charging times by investing in fast charging and battery technology to improve distances and speeds both at the charging station and within the vehicle itself.

Manufacturer Polestar have recently invested in Israeli battery manufacturer StoreDot. StoreDot which promises using its extreme fast-charge (XFC) batteries to deliver a massive 160km of charge in five minutes by 2024, three minutes by 2028 and a miniscule two minutes by 2032. Using two separate techniques.

One a proprietary small organic compound synthesis with silicon nanoparticles, which the company says “does away” with the challenges of silicon such as it’s expansion during charging cycles and subsequent energy loss. Another is a hybrid-solid electrolyte which can create a low-resistance flow of ions between battery electrodes promising to increase battery density.

StoreDot in conjunction with Polestar will adapt and apply this technology to proof-of-concept Electric Vehicles and providing the success of this pilot, drivers can expect to see these batteries within Polestar vehicles by 2026.

"Currently the main hold off point for EVs is their range. Improving that massively whilst cutting speeds means wider adoption and a more easily used option than combustion based vehicles."
