Shrimp are a delicacy across the world. However, where they are most common, in South East Asia farming for them has destroyed over 3.4 million acres of mangrove forests since the 1980s.
These forests are such a fantastic ecosystem for absorbing the carbon in our atmospheres that destroying these have given shrimp farming a carbon footprint higher than cattle, pigs or chicken farming.
Which is unbelievable to think about.
Vertical Oceans plans to take this whole farming operation indoors, in school-bus sized tanks where algae, seaweed and bottom-feeding fish filter out waste, without a need for a sewer and ensuring almost 100% of the water used is recirculated.
A prototype last year delivered over 10 harvests which totalled more than an entire ton of shrimp.
